It goes without saying that the higher ups at Texas A&M have learned their lesson the hard way. Signing Jimbo Fisher to a 10 year, $95 million contract that cost them $77 million just to fire him for not providing the expected results and leaving a blank national championship plaque as a parting gift. Fisher was unable to bring in the offensive weapons he needed to compete at a national level. He lost more quarterbacks than any other team in the SEC, now with Max Johnson entering the transfer portal.
Mike Elko is now the new head coach of the Aggies and served as defensive coordinator under Fisher for three seasons before taking the reins at Duke. Elko led the Blue Devils to two consecutive winning seasons including a Military Bowl victory in 2022.
Although the Blue Devils offense wasn’t exactly sparkling, the defense made up for the effort in his two seasons at Durham. They were ranked fifth in the ACC in total defense last season and improved to second this season, allowing only 19.8 points per game. A far cry from Fisher’s poor performance on offense.
While Fisher’s high powered plan for offense failed, Elko’s defensive tactics will more than make up for it. Once the Aggies start spring practice next season, you’ll see a totally different team that the fans were accustomed to since joining the SEC. Instead of rushing or passing on offense, Elko will be rebuilding defenses from scratch. Texas A&M will not be recognizable in 2024 when Texas and Oklahoma come over to the SEC.
